چکیده

Abslracl. We dcscribe a thcorctical formulation for stereo in terms of the Bayesian approach to vision and rclatc it to psychophysical experiments. The formulation enables us to integrate the depth information from dilI'erent types of matching primitives, or from different vision modules. Wc solvc the correspondence problem using comparibiliry constraints bctwecn fcatures and prior assumprions on the interpolared surfaces that result from the marching. We use techniques from sraristical physics to show how our theory relates lo previous work. Finally we show that, by a suilable choice of prior assumptions about surfaces, the theory is consisrent with some psychophysical experiments which investigate the rclarive importance of different marching primitives.

Temporal integration of motion and stereo cues to depth.

In three experiments we investigated the integration of three-dimensional information provided over time by different depth cues. In the first experiment, we found that the perceptual derivation of surface orientation from the optic flow was affected by the prior presentation of static stereo information in the same spatial location. This bias weakened as the length of the motion sequence incre...

A Glance at Psychophysics Software Programs

Visual stimulation with precise control of stimulus has transformed the field of psychophysics since the introduction of personal computers. Luminance and chromatic features of stimulus, timing, and position of the stimulus are the main features that could be defined using programs written specifically for psychophysical experiments. In this manuscript, software used for the psychophysical expe...

Influence of a stereo surface on the perceived tilt of a monocular line.

This study addressed the issue of how a stereo-specified surface influences the perceived two-dimensional orientation of a monocularly viewed line. In a series of three experiments, it was found that, in general, when a monocular line was embedded in a disparity field specifying a planar surface slanted about the horizontal axis, the tilt of the line depended on the slant of the surface in whic...

Hemispheric differences for the integration of stimulus levels and their contents: evidence from bilateral presentations.

Several studies have demonstrated that hemispheric differences for the processing of hierarchical letter stimuli are more likely to occur when the letters at the levels are associated with conflicting responses. Typically, a single stimulus is presented, so that the conflict occurs between the global and the local levels of the same stimulus. Our hypothesis is that in this situation, conflict r...

Cooperative computation of stereo disparity.

The extraction of stereo-disparity information from two images depends upon establishing a correspondence between them. In this article we analyze the nature of the correspondence computation and derive a cooperative algorithm that implements it. We show that this algorithm successfully extracts information from random-dot stereograms, and its implications for the psychophysics and neurophysiol...
